BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA SIGNED THE UN CONVENTION ON RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Safet Halilović, BiH Minister of Human Rights and Refugees signed on 29th July 2009 in New York the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol, which will then be submitted for ratification to the competent BiH institutions.
The Convention is a comprehensible document that covers civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of persons with disabilities. After the signing and ratification, Bosnia and Herzegovina will be obligated to prepare the programme for implementation of the Convention in the national legislation and action plans for improved quality of life for disabled persons.
The Convention obligates the member-states to implement changes in legislation and outlaw discriminating practices, including protection of right of disabled children, equal access to education, healthcare and rehabilitation, elimination of discrimination in the labour market, the rights to adequate living standards, participation in public affairs, sports and cultural activities.
BiH will have to change and amend legislation on employment, social and health care, education, participation in public and cultural affairs and access to public services and public transport facilities for disabled persons.
